MUMBAI, November 25: The Jain Samata Vahini, an organisation of the Jain community, met Minister of State for Cultural Affairs Anil Deshmukh today to voice protest against sexually explicit scenes in Deepa Mehta's film Fire. The Vahini demanded a ban on the film, alleging that it is a blot on Indian traditional values.Deshmukh said he didn't have any powers to ban the film, but he would certainly ask the Censor Board to ban it if he found it vulgar. Speaking to Express Newsline, the minister said: ``I will be seeing the late night show of the film on Wednesday to form an opinion on the matter. However, as the Censor Board falls under the Central Government's purview, I can only make a recommendation to the government.''
The film, starring Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das Gupta, depicts scenes of lesbianism between the two female protagonists who have unhappy marriages. The Vahini has also protested the alleged mockery of the legend of Ramayana in the film. A scene in which a servant watches ablue film in the presence of an 80-year-old lady has also been objected to by the organisation.
