Turkey PM loses censure vote

REUTERS
ANKARA, Nov 25: Turkish Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz lost a parliamentary censure vote today, according to preliminary voting returns, effectively ending his 17-month old government.

Deputies votes read out by the speaker reached the key number of 276 ensuring the necessary absolute majority in the 550-seat assembly for the opposition motion accusing Yilmaz of corruption in a state bank sell-off.

If the final vote is confirmed as expected, Yilmaz must submit his resignation to President Suleyman Demirel. Demirel will then nominate a prime minister-designate who will try to form a government.
