MUMBAI, NOV 25: Little Genevieve Monteiro slammed in the goal that earned Apostolic Carmel Convent (Bandra) their maiden girls' under-14 title in the MSSA-Colgate Inter-school hockey final at St Stanislaus School, Bandra, today.Capitalising on a 30-yeard firm free-hit by pivot Martina Fernandes, the 11-year-old, the team's highest scorer in the competition, put her team through after winning possession following a goal-mouth scramble. This win over St Francis Xavier's (Kanjur Marg) must have been double satisfying for the team that lost in the final last year.
St Joseph's (Vikhroli) edged St Joseph's (Bandra) for the third spot in an earlier match. Reena Salian, so influential for her team, scored a deserving goal but from the spot in the 28th minute to put her team ahead.
Archana Savarkar scored the insurance goal after the Bandra team's goalkeeper Anjali D'Silva saved an attempt from Amruta Wadke. The rebound was successfully converted by Archana to send her team 2-0 up.
All the better for, aminute later, Raynia Mascarenhas scored her team's morale booster and the Vikhroli team almost pulled off an equaliser barely minutes later. Samantha Ferreira was served with a clean chance and was unlucky to see her shot run into Reena, once again carrying her team's fortunes with her.
APOSTOLIC AHEAD: Genevieve could have scored another in the last minutes of the game. She missed by inches, after the ball miraculously found its way to her waiting stick, evading a host of defenders, after a long clearance by the Apostolic defence.
And some good goalkeeping by Ameliana Fernandes ensured that Apostolic won by little despite dominating almost throughout. It was also the ineffectiveness of the Xavier's triumvirate of Pallavi Bhilare-Shweta Sugdhare-Harshade Labde, so promising in the semi-finals yesterday, that lead to the team from Kanjur Marg failing to make its mark today.
In fact, Harshada missed the one chance that came her way as she latched on to the ball following a scramble at the edge ofthe Apostolic goal, which could have gone anywhere but went out.
Pallavi's do-or-die effort from the left with three minutes remaining earned only a penalty corner.
