CHANDIGARH, Nov 25: Jasmine Kaur and Monica Singh of St Xavier's Secondary School, Chandigarh, won the overall trophy at Lala Suraj Bhan Memorial English declamation contest held in DAV School, Sector 8 on November 24. The overall trophy for Bakshi Tek Chand Hindi declamation contest, held on November 25, went to Palwinder Kaur and Navneet Kaur of General Public School, Mohali.Nineteen teams contested for various awards in the English declamation category. While Shruti Tandon of DAV Public School, Ludhiana, bagged the best speaker award, Monica Singh (St Xavier's, Chandigarh) and Rahul Garg (DAV Model Sr Sec School, Chandigarh) were declared first and second runners-up, respectively.
Consolation prizes went to Jasmine Kaur (St Xavier's, Chandigarh) and Kshitij (St Xavier High School, Panchkula).
The contestants spoke on the following topics: India as a nuclear power, Face of global terrorism, Consumerism, Soaring prices and This happens only in India.
Hindi declamation contest saw 20 participating teams. Individual awards, in the order of merit, went to: Reseema Sood (DAV Public, Ludhiana), Jotika (Chaman Lal DAV Sr Public School, Chandigarh) and Palwinder Kaur (General Public School, Mohali). Consolation prizes were bagged by Asha (Maj R. N. DAV Public School, Ambala Cantt) and Rajan Vishal (DAV Sr Sec School, Sector-8, Chandigarh).
Dr Gyan Verma was the chief guest for English declamation contest, while Dr K.K. Garg, Joint Director, Ministry of Environment and Forests (Northern region) was the guest of honour on the occasion of Hindi declamation.
The contests were part of the ongoing 29 All-India inter-state, inter-school cultural competitions.
