PU cagers will bank upon experience

CHANDIGARH, Nov 25: Experience is what, the Punjab University men's basketball team would be banking on when they defend their title in the North Zone Inter-University basketball championship slated to be held at Hardwar in the first week of December while the All India Inter-University would be held at Gwalior.

``We have good and seasoned players, who would be in the final 12-member team,'' disclosed Amarjit Singh, coach of the team. The PU cagers are currently undergoing a coaching camp at PU Campus. Out of 20 in the camp, the final 12-member team would be selected on November 2.

Besides, experience, the team would be having good height. Pardeep, Nipinderjit and Manpreet Singh, are above six feet and are likely to find a place in the team. ``Average height of our players is six feet, which is an assert to the team and will also add to our success,'' said the coach.

Vishal shines
Vishal's all-round performance (28 and 2 for 12) enabled Government Model School Sector-28 beat St John's High School-26 by 20 runs to enter the semifinal of the Chandigarh State Inter-School under-14 boys group cricket tournament held at Govt School-32 today.

Brief Scores: Govt Model School-28: 121 in 19.4 overs (Vishal 28, Rakesh 12, Jaginder 10, Harneet Singh Arora 5 for 11, Yuvraj 4 for 13); St John's School-26: 101 in 18.1 overs (Harneet Singh Arora 28, Rajat Bhalla 16, Jasraj Bhatti 11, Vishal 2 for 12, Amod 2 for 20, Amit Bakshi 2 for 27).

Black belt for Kanika
Kanika Jain, a class 10th student of Sacred Heart School, was recently awarded a black belt in karate. Kanika, who took to martial arts in 1991, have since then bagged many awards.

Haryana skating
The Haryana State Roller Skating Championship will be held from November 27 to 29 at the Sector 10 Skating Rink here. Haryana Roller Skating Association president Sushil Kumar, more than 300 boys and girls will particiapte in the state meet.

A Haryana team which will take part in the forthcoming Nationals will be selected during the state meet.
