Prosecution zeroes in on character

ASSOCIATED PRESS
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 27: A photograph of ousted deputy prime minister of Malaysia, Anwar Ibrahim, and one of his alleged mistresses was entered into evidence during his sensational corruption and sexual misconduct trial today.Anwar immediately grabbed a photocopy of the colour photograph of himself and the wife of his private secretary and waved it in the air for courtroom spectators to see.

He appeared to be holding the copy up to show the public gallery and media that it showed three people looking directly into a camera, not trying to avoid being photographed. The prosecution is trying to prove that Anwar abused his power as deputy prime minister and finance minister to force police to arrest and obtain retractions from those who had written to authorities accusing him of sodomy and adultery. Anwar has denied the 10 counts of abuse of power and illegal sex. Ummi Hafilda Ali, the sister of Anwar's former secretary, had accused Anwar of having sex with her brother's wife. Azizan Abu Bakar, the politician'sformer chauffeur, claimed he was sodomized by his boss.

The prosecution is trying to prove that Ummi and Azizan retracted their statements only after Anwar sent police to frighten them into reversing their allegations. Amir Junus, a former deputy chief of police intelligence, testified today that Anwar obtained the retractions so that the police would have no reason to continue their criminal investigation against him.

``This would indirectly vindicate Anwar's name,'' Amir said. ``If the accused was an ordinary person and not the deputy prime minister and finance minister, I wouldn't have obeyed the instructions that were given to me,'' Amir testified when asked whether he felt pressured by Anwar.
