At the council-level, there is an alliance between the Bharatiya Janata Party, Shiv Sena and the Congress rebel group led by former council president Arun Jagtap. A meeting of this alliance had taken place on Sunday. However the alliance's candidate for the post could not be finalised. The BJP is learnt to have decided to nominate Lata Lodha for the post. Senior BJP leaders have also okayed her candidature. The BJP has also claimed that Lodha's candidature will not be opposed by other rival political groups.

Shiv Sena's council member Prafulla Pandya is also being discussed for the post. Pandya has already discussed the issue with senior party leaders.

The rebel Jagtap group is likely to nominate either Veena Kantrod or Lata Jadhav. Pushpa Pardeshi is likely to be the Congress nominee. However, none of the groups have made any poll strategy. The picture is still hazy as none of the groups are in a position to ensure the victory of their candidates. Therefore, all groups are presently working out the arithmatic of wooing the required number of members to their side to win the coveted post.

In the council, the BJP and Shiv Sena have 10 and 9 members respectively, while the rebel Jagtap group has five members. The Congress has eight members and the Progressive Democratic Front (PDF) has three members while the remaining 12 are independents. One post in the council is vacant.

Due to the past political incidents, the Congress this time has made elaborate plans to isolate Jagtap in the elections. As a part of this strategy, the party has said that all political parties should come together in the forthcoming elections. Under such circumstances, it is interesting to watch the emergence of new alliances in the council.

A meeting of the Jagtap group was held on Wednesday to chalk out the strategy. A large number of independents had attended the meet and the group's nominee's to the president is most certain, it was learnt. However, the BJP district general secretary Abhay Agarkar has said that the meeting was attended by nine members. He has also claimed that the candidates of the alliance will be elected president.
