MUMBAI, Dec 1: There were a spate of upsets as the second-round matches of the $175000 Mahindra World Open squash championships got under way at the Qatar Tennis and Squash complex here today. It was England's Marcus Berrett who set the trend while disposing off 14th seed Byron Davis of Australia. This was followed by England youngster Lee Beachill upsetting countryman and 12th seed Mark Cairns. Beachill, who came up from the qualifying rounds and is the only qualifier to last the opening round, handed Cairns the worst defeat of his career.
Leading 13-9, and 14-12 Lincou began hitting the tin with amazing regularity and made matters worse by asking for a one-point tie-break when the scores were level at 14-14. Lincou hit the tin again and Hill was through. ``I was plain lucky,'' said Hill after the match before rushing off to get some medical attention as he was cramping badly.
Another Australian Craig Rowland, who had won a five-set thriller against Italian Davide Bianchetti on Monday, could not repeathis form and lost rather tamely to England's No 6 seed Paul Johnson at 17-14, 15-10, 15-12.
The last of the Pakistanis, Amjad Khan, their only player to make it to the second-round, lost in straight games to Canada's Graham Ryding. Amjad, the nephew of the legendary Jansher Khan and the only star on Pakistan's horizon has to put in a lot of work if he hopes to achieve even a fraction of what his illustrious uncle was.
