SURAT, Dec 1: City Police Commissioner Maniram, in a bid to check traffic and pollution related offences, has set up four teams comprising officials from the police, civil supplies departments and the forensic science laboratory (FSL) to check vehicles. The decision was taken at the Road Safety Council meet held at the commissionerate on Tuesday.Maniram said in the meeting that besides checking vehicles for PUC certification, the teams will also book underage riders, those driving without licences and rickshaws carrying more schoolchildren than permitted.
In another significant decision, SMC officials have been asked to penalise heavy vehicle owners in the form of administrative tax. Luxury buses, trucks and other heavy vehicles which are parked haphazardly on roads, causing inconvenience to free flow of traffic will now be penalised by the SMC. He even stated that action would also be taken against ST bus drivers if they halted buses at places other than bus stops.
Among other steps to check the traffic problem, the Commissioner directed officials of the Public Works Department (PWD) to construct speed breakers at more frequent intervals. He also asked them to initiate widening of the road on both sides of the Kribhco and ONGC railway crossings.
