Where do we go now?

Bharat Kumar
I am a student of the science stream of a reputed college in Pune. Being in standard XII, it is very important for us to be guided well. In this regard I would like to enumerate some facts.

Right from Std XI, we were told by one of our science teachers that we must join his private coaching classes for Std XII. He brainwashed us to a great extent and ultimately many of my classmates joined his classes by paying a mammoth sum of Rs 8,000 for just four subjects. My classmates joined his classes for the fear that he would alter their practical marks because he is famous for playing such mischief in the past. Majority of us joined coaching classes because we were told by our mentors to do so. In the initial months of June and July, there was nothing going on in the college except the admission procedure and in the latter half some practicals.

In the month of August, for the first 15 days there were regular lectures but no attendance was taken by the professors. This boasted the morale of the ones who bunk regularly.

From the latter half of August, started the fever among the teachers as to not conduct lectures. Due to this regular students started losing interest in college.

One teacher would take a lecture in the morning and the next one would be conducted in the afternoon. We, in the process, would lose around three hours daily of our precious time. Whenever there was an off lecture, we would sit in the same room and study. But thanks to the peons we couldn't study because an off lecture was the time whey they would clean the rooms. We would have no place to study because the library is always jam-packed and the playground very dusty. When such a condition is prevailing, why would we waste our time in college? So then started the trend among the students that they must attend only the practicals and return home.

At the same time, the college professors have already distributed the brochures of their respective private coaching classes for next year. At the end of this year when there are only two to three months for the academic year to get over, it is worthless and foolishness on the part of the education department to impose restrictions.

Inspite of the UGC scale hike, either way it is we students who will be suffering, because inspite of repeated complaints to the principal, be flatly refuses by saying that, ``He has faith in his staff''.
