NEW DELHI, Dec 2: Home Minister L K Advani came under fire in the Rajya Sabha today when the Opposition accused him of committing breach of privilege by announcing corrections to the final report of the Jain Commission of Inquiry outside Parliament.
When Advani sought to place a copy of the corrigendum to the Action Taken Report, correcting a portion of the original report which had references to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, Mohammad Salim (CPM) and Jayanti Natarajan (TMC) objected.
The Jain Commission report, Salim said, was the property of the House and any corrections to it should have been first reported to it. Instead, the corrections were made public outside. ``A lot of political mileage was derived out of this,'' he charged.
Natarajan asserted that the issue involved a question of breach of privilege of the House. ``It is an insult to the House to lay the corrigendum three months after it was made public. The Home Minister should apologise,'' she said.
Congress members HHanumanthappa and S M Krishna also echoed the same sentiment, saying that what was sought to be corrected was not a typographical or grammatical error. The correction was substantive in nature.
In reply, Advani contended that there had been a mix-up in the chapter heads of the report which was being corrected through the corrigendum. He recalled that he had promised to inform Parliament of the correction the moment it met.
This did not satisfy the Opposition. But chairman Krishan Kant intervened quickly to restore normalcy.
