Navy medium-pacers rock Dena Bank

MUMBAI, Nov 2: Fine medium-pace bowling performances by Kapil Dev Pandey and Sayad Javed put Indian Navy on the victory path against Dena Bank on the second day of the three-day first-round league match of the Times B Division cricket tournament at the Karnatak ground, Cross Maidan, today.

At the close of play, Navy, set to score 77 for an outright win, were 35 for one in the Group C match. Indian Navy, resuming at 57 for four and chasing a target of 170 for the first innings lead, did well to take a slender first innings lead of four runs before they were bowled out for 174. At one stage, Navy were struggling at 80 for seven. However, the eighth wicket pair of Amit Nadkarni (34) and Sanjeev Mehrora (48) came to their rescue by putting on 77 runs.

In the second innings, Dena Bank did no better and were shot out for 80 which included eight penalty runs. Pandey, who had taken four wickets in the first innings, took five for 25 in the second innings to finish with a match haul of nine for 59, while Javedcaptured five for 43 in the second innings to have match figures of eight for 96.

A fighting unbeaten 60 with the help of seven fours by all-rounder Janak Mistry, who had taken three wickes on the first day, was not enough for defending champions Varun Shipping to take a first innings lead over Bank of India in Group A.

BoI, after taking a slender lead of 23 runs, were 10 for two in their second knock at draw of stumps. In the morning, BoI added just four runs before they were all out for 241. Medium-pacer Umesh Patwal, who had taken three wickets, finished with 4 for 60 while left arm spinner Digvijay Singh claimed three for 58.

New India Assurance, after taking a first innings lead of 105 runs over State Bank, did well to score 215 for five in their second knock. Thanks to Prashan Dalvi, who scored an attacking 101 with the help of 14 fours and a six. He was associated in an 87 runs stand for the fourth wicket with Anand Venkatraman.

In the morning, medium-pacer Jagdish Shetty took five wickets for59 runs to restrict SBI to 205, which included 12 penalty runs, in reply to NIA's total of 310.
