Home minister in city

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, Dec 3: Much can be done and I have issued the necessary directions,'' was State Home Minister Haren Pandya's reply, when asked about the crime scenario in the city and the district. The minister was on a one-day visit of the city on Thursday.

Naming three satta and gambling dens that he visited along with police officials on morning, the minister, while addressing reporters at the Police Commissionerate's Committee Hall, said that he found the dens of Rashid Chakardi and Vasant Jeevan open, while the third den, run by one Mustoor, was shut a couple of days ago. He said he saw people consuming liquor in the open in the Golwad area. ``I have seen these things for myself and have issued notices to the concerned Police Inspectors, ACPs and DCPs,'' he said, adding, the crime files and history-sheets of criminals were not updated at the Mahidharpura police station.

Earlier in the day, Pandya held separate meetings with party leaders, city police officials and the district police officials. He also visited the families of two minor girls, who were murdered last week.

Announcing measures to check crime, he said the Range IG O P Mathur would lead a team, comprising city DCP and DSPs of Surat, Navsari and Valsad districts, to check organised crime. On transfers of policemen, he said the government had handed over the authority to transfer policemen to the DGP.

Stating his party's stand on communal standoffs, he said while the government would not ensure that the guilty were punished, it would not pamper the minorities either. ``Forcible conversions are illegal in the first place and minorities will not be pampered on the issue,'' he maintained.
