Face Off

Sujata Assomull
Inder Sudan, second-time KS model and catwalk king, tells Sujata Assomull that he dares to bare -- because the risk is in the challenge

Age?

Inder has no problem revealing his age -- he just has a different way of saying it. "I was born in 1972." For those of you whose Math is weak, that means he is 26 years old.

Married?

Not exactly. He was married to the model Jessae Randhawa but two years later they decided to call it off. So, right now he is single. What led to the split? "Personal problems." That's all Inder is willing to reveal.

Would he like to get married again, in the near future?

No, not in the near future. "I need time."

Okay, on to professional things -- how did Inder enter the world of modelling?

It all began with the Delhi designer, JJ Vallaya. The spiffily-dressed sardar spotted Inder, and his fabulously toned body, in Chandigarh in 1993. And immediately asked him to model for him. "I was very nervous but the other boys, like Rahul Dev, MilindSoman and Arjun Rampal really helped me out." And soon, Inder become a regular on the ramp.

What happened to the rest of his life? Wasn't he a college student when he stepped in to the world of glamour?

Inder finished his Economics and Political Science degree by correspondence. Since Inder's dad was in the Army, he was used to shifting schools and studying via mail.

A Politics student hmmm ... any ambitions of becoming a politician?

No way. "I was really interested in Economics. I just took Politics because I was told it was an easy option."

It was the search of the easy option that took Inder to Delhi as well.

He had been told that a shift to the capital was the only way to enhance his career. A wise decision. In Delhi, he met Atul Kasbekar's former assistant, Tarun Khiwal, who introduced him to his teacher. At that time the lensman was looking for the Kama Sutra male model. And Inder found himself cast opposite Shweta Menon. He also joined the ranks of fellow ramp models,Marc Robinson and Rahul Dev -- both of who were KS models before him.

And does he intend to follow in Marc and Rahul's footsteps again and join films?

For sure. But that's hardly a surprise as all models want to become actors today. And they all want is a role with a difference, like Inder. "I would like to either do an action role or something very intense."

But until the right offer comes along, is Inder content being the KS guy?

Sure. He thinks it is quite an honour to be cast in the KS campaign twice, in a row. "It is such a high-profile and prestigious campaign."

But doesn't all the controversy surrounding the ad worry him?

He is used to controversy. Before his first KS campaign, he did an underwear ad for Rivolta -- for which Inder bared all except his underpants. Causing quite a stir.

But how does it feel to be with women in provocative poses?

With Shweta, Inder had no problems as they were old friends and had done many ramp shows together. With the new KSgirl, Viveka Babajee, he was a little more hesitant as he had never met this former Miss Mauritius. "But she was so professional and easy going, I had no trouble."

What does he think of the new campaign?

Inder thinks that the ad agency, Heartbeat, Atul and Pankuj Parashar (the man behind the ad film) have done a great job. "This is the first KS ad-film since the one Marc did for the launch. And it so different from the previous campaigns. For instance, I love the way they have used water in the press and ad-films."

And how does the KS man keep his body so perfectly toned?

With great ease. He says he has an ectomorphic body which means that he does not gain weight easily. But even though he does not watch what he eats, he works-out.

But many of the new boys on the ramp seem to look leaner than him, does that worry him?

"It is important to have a good toned body, the frame does not matter." For the ramp, attitude and versatility is what matters -- Inder believes he hasboth.

But what happens when the time comes to retire?

He has thought of that. If he does not get a break in films then Inder will retire gracefully and go to Canada. His mother has a family there who are in the health business. "I am really into health so it is something I would really enjoy doing." Not that Inder needs to worry about his career -- at the moment, he is one of the most in-demand male models.

And what is this male super-model most likely to say?

"Never have any regrets."

And least likely to say?

For once this chatty young man is at a loss for words. "I am not sure about this one."
