MUMBAI, DEC 7: Two years after social worker Anna Hazare raised corruption charges against Ministers and bureaucrats, over a hundred officials have been chargesheeted. Interestingly, Ministers and MLAs against whom Hazare had levelled charges, have managed to emerge unscathed.Hazare's attack was more or less focussed on Social Welfare Minister Baban Gholap, the then Food and Civil Supplies Minister Shobha Phadanvis and the then Irrigation Minister Mahadeo Shivankar.
The complaints ranged from misuse of office to misappropriation of funds by Government employees as well as elected representatives.
However, Inquiry Commissions have exonerated Gholap, Phadanvis and Shivankar of corruption charges, citing ``lack of sufficient evidence''.
The charges were raised by Hazare through letters to Chief Minister Manohar Joshi. He had also gone on hunger strike twice, protesting Government's inaction.
When contacted, Chief Minister Manohar Joshi said, ``Apart from punitive action, my Government has takendifferent policy decisions to fight corruption. I have been conducting meetings with officers in this connection. I am planning to write a detailed letter to Anna Hazare to inform him about the status of his complaints and I hope he will also be satisfied.''
Acting on the charges, the Government has so far taken action against 101 employees. One official has been dismissed.
Hazare had raised corruption charges against officials in Soil and Water Conservation Department, Irrigation, Cooperation, Agriculture, Animal Husbandary, Dairy Development and Fisheries Department, Public Health, Water Supply and Sanitation, Public Works, Home, Finance and Planning, Rural Development, Urban Development, School Education, Revenue and Forests, General Administration, Energy, Social Welfare, Housing and Special Assistance Department.
Out of the 398 complaints spread over the six revenue divisions of the State -- Konkan, Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad, Amaravati and Nagpur -- primary investigations have been completed in 380.However, 176 cases have been discarded as baseless. Inquiry in still going on in 18 cases.
