Jaya snaps poll pact with BJP

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHENNAI, DEC 7: AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalitha today declared that there is no AIADMK front in Tamil Nadu now, revealing that the tie-up with electoral allies in Tamil Nadu, particularly the BJP, MDMK, and PMK was all over. A new front would be formed at the time of the next elections, she said, expressing her unhappiness over the ``piecemeal'' Cabinet expansion.

Talking to mediapersons at the Chennai airport on return from Hyderabad, Jayalalitha said ``Let me make it very clear. Now, there is no AIADMK front. There was one at the time of the election. Not now. When another election takes place, then a new front will be formed,'' she said hinting at the formation of a new alliance.

Asked if she was severing ties with the PMK, MDMK..., Jayalalitha said ``I have not severed the ties with anyone. The AIADMK front does not exist now. It existed at the time of elections and such fronts are only for elections.''

Jayalalitha said she was unhappy that Prime MInister Atal Behari Vajpayee had notconsulted her on the Cabinet expansion. All the other allies were also not consulted and were equally unhappy. The BJP should not take the allies for granted, she said.

When pointed out that she had been holding talks with her electoral partners from time to time even after the February Lok Sabha polls, Jayalalitha said ``that was a long time ago. You must ask leaders of the other parties who were in that front.''

When a reporter asked her about the stand of the PMK and MDMK that they were still part of the front, Jayalalitha said ``I am afraid I am at a loss to understand what they mean by that''.

Jayalalitha said the AIADMK was willing to consider forming an alliance with the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC). She however said the question of forming an alliance with the TMC was hypothetical. ``There have been no feelers or messages from the TMC. If there are, we will consider them.''

``I am not sending feelers to anyone,'' she said, adding that the AIADMK did not seek alliances with anyone. ``We aresought after.''

Asked if Sonia Gandhi had contacted her or sent any feelers to her, Jayalalitha said, ``This is something I do not wish to discuss now.''On the attempts to form a third front by the PMK and the MDMK, she wished them success saying in a democratic country, parties have the democratic right to form alliances.

Talking about cabinet expansion Jayalalitha said, `` The Prime Minister did not consult me. Mr George Fernandes (Defence Minister) spoke to me.''

She replied that she was certainly not happy with what happened. The AIADMK put forth certain proposals to the Prime Minister regarding Cabinet expansion, she said ``We expect our request will be considered. No discussion has taken place on that again. I have already told Mr Fernandes when he spoke to me that I am not in favour of a piecemeal expansion like this. And when the PM is ready to discuss our proposal, I said I am ready for a discussion at anytime.''

She said she did not want to discuss the details through the media on what theAIADMK has proposed to the PM. She said no appointment was sought with him now. On the statements of PMK leader Dr Ramadoss and the MDMK that there would be a Cabinet expansion soon, she said she could not take cognisance of their statements. It had to come from the Prime Minister.

Jayalalitha said she was given to understand that there would be a full scale expansion later but she must be consulted before it took place. On whether specific portfolios were sought for the AIADMK nominees, Jayalalitha said it would not be appropriate to discuss it in the media.

Coming down heavily on the BJP-led Government, Jayalalitha said ``We are certainly not happy with the functioning of the Government. I have made that clear several times in the past. I say that now.'' On whether the AIADMK ministers at the Centre would quit, Jayalalitha said ``No. That is not on the cards.''

Asked if she thought the BJP has become a more secular party, she said based on their statements, ``it is for the people to judgenow.''

Asked if the BJP coalition has reached a point of `break-up', Jayalalitha clarifying, ``You mean a point of no return,'' said ``Not yet. There has been a lot of dissatisfaction among the allies.''

Jayalalitha added the AIADMK will certainly not be the cause for a mid-term poll in the country. On whether the AIADMK would support the Congress if it wanted to form a Government in view of the constant `ill-treatment' meted out to the AIADMK by the BJP, Jayalalitha said, ``At the moment, the question doesn't arise. The BJP-led coalition is still in place. We are still part of it.''

Asked if she was in touch with the Congress, she replied ``That is something that I cannot reveal now. I am in touch with people in all parties. We have friends in all parties.'' Asked if she was keeping her options open, the AIADMK leader replied, ``I said that already. Any good political leader will have to do that.'' As for general elections in the country, Jayalalitha said ``I can't say. I did not say that we are goingfor it. On whether the situation called for an alternative Government, Jayalalitha said it was ``a hypothetical question.''
