Disappointing start for Indian shooters

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
BANGKOK, DEC 7: It was a disappointing opening day for Indian shooters even as superpower China ended up on the wrong side of the winner's list. India's Satendra Kumar failed to make the final round while Vladimir Guchsha of Kazhakstan won the men's individual Free Pistol and Kim Jung Mi of Korea took the gold in women's Air Rifle. China's Wang Yifu got a silver medal in men's free pistol and Xhao Yinghui managed only a bronze in women's air rifle.

Satendra Kumar missed qualifying for the final of Individual Free Pistol by two points and ended ninth out the 65 participants. Satendra was the lone Indian in the event. He shot 552, which is what was expected of him, said Sujit Chakravarty, one of the officials accompanying the Indian shooting squad.

In the women's Air Rifle, India's Anuja Tere (388) was joint 16th, while Suma Dixit (384) was 27th and Anjali Vedpathak (380) ended joint 35th. Kim Jng Mi of Korea took the gold with 498.6 points, while T Pupiromchaikul of Thailand grabbed the silver with 496.6and Zhao Yinghui of China got the bronze with 495.0.

In men's free pistol, the gold went to Kazhak Guchsha whose brilliant Asian record breaking performance of 567 in the qualifying 600 shots gave him a handy lead. He shot only 90.8 in the final, but still held on for the gold, 657.8, while Wang Yifu of China, the pre-Games favourite, climbed to silver medal after being fifth spot in the qualifying with 559. He had a good score of 96.5 which saw him total 655.5 and Kim Jong Su of North Korea, fourth in the qualifiers sneaked onto the podium for a bronze with a good 95.4 in the final.
