Sec 31 labour colony to be shifted to Mauli Jagran by month-end

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Dec 7: The Chandigarh Administration has decided to shift the Sector 31 labour colony to Mauli Jagran by month-end.

As part of the plan for resettlement of jhuggi-dwellers of the colony, over 2,500 colony residents would be provided with bare sites in Mauli Jagran, on which they would have to put up their own structures. Work on the shifting is already underway, say officials.

According to sources, each rehabilitated colony resident in Mauli Jagran would also be provided basic facilities like sewerage, roads and water supply, for which they would have to pay a token monthly rent of Rs 100 to the municipal corporation.

This is the second colony to be shifted where bare sites have been given, on which a monthly rent would be charged by the municipal corporation. Earlier, over 1,700 Shaheed Bhagat Singh (Karsan) Colony residents were shifted to Palsora Colony in Sector 52, under the resettlement scheme, where they would also be paying a monthly token rent to the MC for the basic amenities provided to them.

As per the plan, each rehabilitated resident would get an area of 10 feet by 22 feet on which he would have to raise his own structure. During the earlier resettlements, colony residents have been provided with built-up sites by the Administration.

With the shifting of the colony, the Air Force area in Sector 31 would now be cleared of all structures in the colony, as no jhuggi would be allowed to remain in the area. Lists of those to be rehabilitated to the new site have already been prepared.

The Air Force authorities had earlier objected to the existence of the slums in the area and sought for their removal on the issue of flight safety and for security reasons. As per Ministry of Defence rules, no structures can come up within 2,000 metres of an important military installation.
