Grants threat may blow up on govt

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
GANDHINAGAR, Dec 7: The State Government's threat to deduct the grants to Christian schools is likely to snowball into a major controversy, with Minister of State for Education Anandiben Patel justifying the threat and the Governor reportedly deciding to seek an explanation from the government.

According to sources, the Governor's office may write to Chief Secretary L N S Mukundan, directing him to send a report to Raj Bhavan about actions the government had initiated to protect the minorities from attacks.

The Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary had a prolonged closed-door meeting today in the former's chamber at the Secretariat today where they reviewed the situation.

Surprisingly, Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel is yet to react, despite Governor Anshuman Singh having taken a serious view of the government circular threatening to cut the grants to those Christian schools which took part in Friday's programme to protest against the recent attacks on the Christian community in Gujarat and elsewhere in the country.

Anandiben told reporters today: ``I will first seek Union Human Resources Development Minister M M Joshi's directive on the issue and then act accordingly (whether to deduct the grants)." She, however, maintained a studied silence over the stand, if any, adopted by the state Bharatiya Janata Party.

When her attention was drawn to Singh's assurance to the Christian delegation on Saturday that he would ask the government what prompted it to issue the threat, she quipped: I am not aware of this development. If the Governor seeks the government's explanation, we will look into it''.

She said the government was not against Christians or for any minority community taking out a protest rally in any form to air grievances. ``But, closure of schools during such protest programmes cannot be tolerated. I stick to the Education Department's threat to cut the grants to Christian schools'', she asserted, adding she had not yet received any representation from the community.

Yesterday, Joshi had told reporters in Rajkot that he would check up facts with the State Government.
