HC directs police to expedite Chattarpur temple investigation

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, December 7: The Delhi High Court today directed the Crime Branch of the Delhi Police to expeditiously probe the complaint of the priests of the Chhattarpur temple against its management for beating them up and sacking them from their jobs.

A division bench comprising Justice Devinder Gupta and Justice Mukul Mudgal gave the directions and disposed of the petition of the pujaris.

The bench, in its brief order, noted the submission of the counsel for the Delhi Police, S.S. Gandhi, that an FIR had been registered on November 30 and the probe has been transferred to the Crime Branch. It directed that if more offences were disclosed during the probe, then appropriate sections be added to the FIR. If the petitioners were still not satisfied with the probe, they were at liberty to approach the court at a later stage, the order said.

The petitioners had alleged that the police was not registering their case as it was under the influence of the Chhattarpur temple management. The petition, on behalf of Divakar Pandey and other priests, accused the management of mercilessly beating them up on July 4 this year with the help of ``ruffians, goons and police personnel'' for raising the demand for minimum wages.

The temple management was annoyed that the priests had formed the Shri Adya Katyayani Shakti Peeth Mandhi Employees Welfare Association, which was registered on May 2, the petition said.

The management allegedly threatened some of the association members. Despite fax message to the prime minister, the home minister, the LG of Delhi and the police chief, no action had been taken and no FIR was registered against the people involved in the incident, the petitioners complained.
