Vananchal: Bihar MPs apologise

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, DEC 9: A group of BJP MPs from Bihar who yesterday threatened to resign their Lok Sabha seats to press the demand for creation of Vananchal state today met Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and apologised.

They hoped that the Government would initiate necessary legislation for Vananchal in Parliament soon.

In a fresh letter to Vajpayee, they apologised for the threat and said it was designed to convey the feelings of the people and that they had no intention to harm the party.

``We are dedicated party workers and we feel confident after our talks with central leadership that the Bill will soon be introduced in Parliament for creation of Vananchal,'' the letter said.

The MPs also met Home Minister L K Advani and expressed regrets over yesterday's resignation threat, according to BJP spokesman Venkaiah Naidu.

Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Environment and Forest Babu Lal Marandi, who was one of the signatories to the letter, today disassociated himself from any threats ofresignation on the issue, though he said that he supported creation of Vananchal and introduction of the Bill.

``The memorandum that I have signed did not in any way suggest a threat of resignation on this issue. Therefore, I dissociate myself from any threats of resignation on the Vananchal issue,'' he said in a statement here.

Marandi's statement comes close on the heels of a similar stand taken by Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha who was also a signatory to the letter.
