Congress welcomes Thackeray's stand

Express News Service
MUMBAI, Dec 9: In a surprise move, the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) today welcomed the stand taken by Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray on the row over demolition of 121 bungalows at Yeoor in Thane district.

``Our consistent view is that the bungalows should not be demolished if they're going to be regularised. In such cases, the government or the competent authority should recover adequate compensation from the concerned bungalow owners,'' MPCC spokesman Vasant Chavan said.

Chavan alleged the action initiated by Thane Municipal Commissioner T Chandrashekhar was not only in a hurry, but without application of mind. ``Our information is that he did not even consult either the Chief Minister or top officials before ordering demolition of the bungalows,'' Chavan said.

Though Congress was not in favour of any disciplinary action against the Thane Commissioner, Chavan said his action was against public interest.

Following instructions of Thackeray, Chief Minister Manohar Joshi had on Mondaystayed demolition of the bungalows. Thackeray had taken the view that instead of demolishing the bungalows, the government should confiscate the entire property.

Chavan said before regularising such bungalows, the competent authority should ensure all the bungalows are safe for occupation and they do not involve either tribal or forest land. ``Government should recover adequate compensation from them, but at the same should not dilute any of the conditions laid down under existing rules,'' Chavan pointed out.
