DHAKA, DEC 9: India has asked Bangladesh to sell its transit services to New Delhi for transportation of goods to its north-eastern states even on terms convenient to the latter.The two-day commerce-secretary level bilateral trade talks between them concluded here today with the signing of minutes.
The Indian side, led by commerce secretary P Prabhu, reitereated to withdraw all quantitive restrictions in its trade with Bangladesh but did not agree to Dhaka's demand to give zero tariff facility to Bangladesh exports.
Prabhu soon after signing the minutes of treaty told newsmen that India had lifted all the quantitive restrictions with effect from August 1, 1998 on all items of import from SARRC countries barring those items under canalised and prohibited categories.
Bangladesh commerce secretary Farooq Chowdhury said that India did not agree to give zero tariff to goods exported to it to reduce the huge trade gap.Responding to his counterparts demand, Prabhu said said under the free marketarrangement market forces determined the size of the foreign trade with any other country.
