MUMBAI, DEC 9: It was the day of the journeymen in the eighth round of the Young Challengers-organised Independence Cup Chess tournament. Three International Masters bit the dust even as LIC's Sriram Jha maintained his position in the lead with seven points from eight rounds after beating IM Shekar Sahu of Union Bank.N Sanjay defeated LIC's Anup Deshmukh, Vedant Goswami defeated former National champion and IM Ponnuswamy Konguvel of ONGC while IM Neeraj Mishra of Tata Steel crashed to teenager Amardeep Bartakke. Jha defeated Sahu when the latter played a wrong move from an advantageous position. Sahu's 22nd move 22...c3 opened up the game for Jha when Sahu had a clear plan on the queen-side. Jha went on to win in 43 moves.
Jha in the lead may be joined by Sudhakar Babu of Indian Bank or Atanu Lahiri of LIC. Both were playing in the top board. But by all accounts the game seemed headed for a draw.

BHA COLTS IN FINAL: Bomabay Hockey Association (BHA) Colts and Karnataka Postal Board will meet in the final of the 19th Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar All-India hockey tournament at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Stadium, Kolhapur.
Colts defeated Mumbai Port Trust (MPT) 3-1 in the first semifinal while Karnataka Postal Board got past Central Railway, Mumbai 4-1 via tie-breaker.
