MUMBAI, December 9: The state government may introduce the Allowed To Keep Term (ATKT) system in Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations. If implemented, the move will help over seven lakh students in the state who fail to pass the examinations and cannot proceed with further studies. The state government has appointed a committee of members of the Maharashtra State Secondary and Higher Secondary Examination Board to set the system into gear, Higher and Technical Education minister Datta Rane told presspersons at Mantralaya on Tuesday.
The committee is expected to submit its report before March next year, and the system could be well introduced from the next academic year, added Rane.
He held that ATKT would help students a great deal. ``Most of the students fail either in English language or in Mathematics. This poses an obstacle to their education after SSC and HSC. By introducing ATKT, students would be encouraged to study further. Such students will beadmitted to vocational courses with the condition that they will have to pass the course within two years of admission,'' Rane said.
A student cannot seek admission to vocational courses being offered at the Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) if he or she fails SSC or HSC. Rane assured that students who failed SSC and HSC could be accommodated in governmental departments like industries, education, agriculture, trade and commerce on the basis of the IT knowledge they get in schools.
