Rein in onion price, the rest will go down

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, December 9: Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit today said the cost of onions has come to be the benchmark of vegetable prices in the capital and therefore need to be focused upon and reined in.

Dikshit said this after she met senior NAFED and Delhi Food and Civil Supplies department officials.

``When the onion prices go down, it will have a salutary effect on the prices of other vegetables. We have directed all retailers to display the prices of essential commodities so that consumers do not get shortchanged,'' she said.

The frequency of the weekly vegetable markets will also be increased. The CM also directed officials to procure more onions from Nashik and other onion producing areas to increase the supplies in the open market.

The CM also said she would be meeting the Haryana Chief Minister on Friday to get more water from his state for the 40 mgd Nangloi water treatment plant which supplies drinking water to West, South and rural Delhi.
