PUNE, Dec 9: With the proposed 100-ft road joining the Amruteshwar Mandir to Sambhaji bridge along the river scheduled to be re-aligned in the channel itself, residents of nearly 100 buildings at Shaniwar and Narayan Peth can breathe a sigh of relief as it would avert their rehabilitation. The civic administration's proposal seeking permission for the legal process towards the re-alignment will come up before the city improvement committee by the month end.
The proposed 100-ft road was included in the Development Plan of 1987. The road would extend from Sangam to Karvenagar. While the work is underway between Mhatre bridge and Karvenagar, constructing the road seemed well nigh impossible due to the congested areas at Shaniwar Wada leading up to Sambhaji bridge. As an alternative, the road will be re-aligned in the channel of the Mutha river.
Had the road been constructed along the river, nearly 105 properties at Shaniwar and Narayan Peth would have to be razed down. Similar steps had been undertaken by the administration by issuing notices to the residents.
Due to the residents' opposition to the scheme, the construction of the road had remained on paper. The re-alignment of the road forms part of the ambitious Mutha River Improvement scheme according to which the construction of the wide and central channels to ensure the free flow of water will be completed by June.
This includes the central channelising of the 1.5 km long stretch of Mutha river between Mhatre Bridge and MES Causeway, Shivaji bridge and Sangam bridge and Mhatre bridge to Yashwantrao Chavan bridge (near Poona Hospital).
