MUMBAI, DEC 12: In a freak accident at Chunabhatti in the north-eastern suburbs of the city, a kerosene can exploded resulting in the death of a couple on Friday.On Friday afternoon, Raju Narayan Tandel, resident of Krishna Govind Raikar Chawl, decided to get rid of insects in his house by throwing a burning paper on them. A kerosne container which was kept nearby also caught fire. The fire spread rapidly engulfing the wooden furnitures in Tandel's house.And before Tandel could realise what happened, he and his wife, Geeta, were in flames.
Hearing the couple scream for help, the neighbours came to help them. The couple were admitted to Sion Hospital. Geeta was admitted with 75 per cent burns and Raju 76 per cent. However, on Saturday morning, the couple succumbed to their injuries.
Senior police inspector of the Nehru Nagar police station S M Naik said, ``In their statement to the police they admitted that it was an accident and no foul play or suicide attempt.''
