Loknyayalaya held at Esplanade

MUMBAI, DEC 13: The second Loknyayalaya was held at the Esplanade court on Saturday and 28 of the 70 cases on board were settled amicably.

Two panels of three advocates each heard cases of dishonouring of cheques filed under section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act (NIA) under the supervison of Metropolitan Magistrate of the 28th court M R Puranik.

According to the President of the Bombay Metropolitan Magistrate's Courts Bar Association, C N Ratnani, Lok Adalats are held to work out an amicable and early settlement between two disputing parties. He said that the punishment under section 138 of NI Act can extend upto one year and the fine is double the amount involved in the case.
