Seven J J Hospital doctors indicted

NAGPUR, DEC 14: The committee set up to probe the doctor-criminal nexus in the government-run J J Hospital in Mumbai has indicted seven doctors, Chief Minister Manohar Joshi told the Legislative Assembly today.

Joshi intervened during question hour when Minister of State for Health Dr Vijaykumar Gavit was finding the going tough while facing an aggressive Opposition.

Joshi said an enquiry committee was appointed, taking cognisance of reports appearing in The Indian Express about the nexus and demand raised by several leaders to take action against the guilty. Seven doctors were found involved, he added. The Home department is scrutinising the enquiry report and the details of the inquiry including names of the doctors could be disclosed later, he said.

Meanwhile, the names of five persons indicted in the report by the high-level committee headed by Dr Pradnya Pai, dean of KEM Hospital are as follows: Chetan Oberoi, Haridas, M G Rathod, Mohan T, and Machiswala. In all 548 criminals were admittedto the JJ Hospital between 1991 and 1997.

Earlier, Minister of State for Health Dr Vijaykumar Gavit said that the inquiry committee which was set up in July this year, submitted its report on November 27.

However, when the Opposition pressed for more information about the details of the inquiry, the minister said scrutiny of the report was still in progress and hence he was not in a position to say anything.
