NEW DELHI, Dec 16: The Attorney General Soli J Sorabjee has filed a suit in the Delhi High Court against the Media Asia Pvt Ltd and M J Akbar, Editor-in-Chief of the Asian Age and others for alleged libelous statements published against him in the newspaper. Sorabjee has claimed damages of Rs 1 crore as a token sum.Sorabjee's contention is that there has been no breach of the Law Officers Rules nor has there been any impropriety by the Attorney General in giving an opinion on issues arising between private parties about the interpretation of certain provisions of the Company Law. He contended that the opinion is unpalatable to the Mallaya group which has a stake in the Asian Age. He alleged that the newspaper had been misused to further the commercial interests of the Mallaya group.
The suit noted that the draft of the so-called apology offered was totally unsatisfactory and indicated that the defendants are likely to repeat publication of the defamatory articles against Sorabjee.
HighCourt judge Justice Dalveer Bhandari, after hearing K K Venugopal and Mukul Rohatgi who appeared for Sorabjee, injuncted the defendants from publishing or circulating any article which is defamatory to Sorabjee in respect to the two impugned articles.
