EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, DECEMBER 16: The State Legislative Council today witnessed an uproarious scene when the Shiv Sena member, Neela Desai, raised the issue of lady corporator of New Mumbai, Meena Bhagwan More, who was allegedly set afire by three Congress activists on Monday night.

Initiating a discussion by raising a point of propriety, Desai said that a stern action be taken against the persons involved and sought a statement on the issue from government immediately. She even threatened that if the government failed to provide the necessary information in the House, they would not allow to continue the business of the House.

Recalling the notorious Tandoor episode of Delhi, she described the recent happenings as inhuman and said that maximum punishment should be awarded to the culprits for the crime. She was supported by her party colleagues, Shishir Shinde, Ravindra Mirlekar and others.

Responding to the issue, the Deputy Chief Minister, Gopinath Munde, who also holds the Home portfolio, informed theHouse that Meena More sustained 77 per cent burn injuries and was rushed to the hospital where she was reported to be critical. Munde said that three persons were arrested in this connection. They are : Yogendra Pande, Rakesh Tiwari and Bapi Bhattacharya. All are the active members of Congress, he claimed adding that of them, Pande is the joint secretary of Congress party of Navi Mumbai.

Meena had an altercation with the Congress activists over the delay in construction of a common water tap in the Chinchpada slum area on Monday night. In the heat of argument after she was accused of delaying the installation of the tap, one of the accused sprinkled kerosene on her and set her alight.
