War weapons on display

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Dec 16: From small arms ammunition to the jet propelled rocket used as anti-tank weapons by the infantry. From the belt, car, parcel and human bombs to the gun machines atop the T-55 tanks. The Pune Sub Area Ground virtually resembled a battlefield. The only difference was the jawans were replaced by excited school children who had a field day learning the ABCs of war weapons.

"Do you have it in you to join the Indian Army," reads the impressive soldier's word at the equipment display organised at the ground. It was opened to the public to mark the Vijay Divas celebrations, today. Not surprisingly the Kendriya Vidyalaya Southern Command school children made a beeline for a ride on the tanks and BMPs.

Every December 16, Vijay Divas is celebrated to mark the surrender of the Pakistan Army to the three service commanders in the then East Pakistan (Bangladesh) at the end of the Indo-Pak war in December 1971. It was first celebrated in 1995 at New Delhi.

Sub Area Commander Brig Madan Gopal, laid a wreath at the War Memorial at Morwada Gardens near the headquarters. To mark the beginning of the year of the jawan, a jawan attired in summer ceremonials also laid the wreath at the war memorial. A large number of war widows, serving and retired officers, JCOs and other ranks besides prominent citizens attended the memorial service. The two-day exhibition (which will be open to the public from 10 am to 6 pm.) displayed an array of rifles, machine guns, pistols, grenades and recoilless ammunition.
