224 file papers for MSU polls

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Dec 16: A total 224 candidates are in the fray for the 15 posts of the Maharaja Sayajirao University student union elections, scheduled to be held on December 24. While Wednesday was the last date to submit the nomination forms, those who wish to withdraw their nominations could do so by Friday.

University authorities have made adequate security arrangements to prevent any untoward incident on the campus during campaigning.

As many as 10 students are contesting for the post of the university vice-president, 15 for the post of the university general secretary and 199 for the post of the faculty representatives.

Speaking about the measures to be adopted this year, returning officer N M Bhatt said, ``We are going to pay extra attention while scrutinising forms. "Those students who have a criminal record or those who have cases of malpractice during examinations against them would not be allowed to contest.''

``We intend to implement the punitive measures as passed by the syndicate this year for peaceful elections,'' Bhatt said. He said those students who have exceeded a term of six years from the date of passing their HSC examinations would also not be allowed to contest the election.

Meanwhile, election fever has gripped the campus with campaigning picking up. While those contesting for the post of the Faculty representatives are campaigning in the respective faculties, those in the fray for the post of the general secretary and vice-president are moving in the whole campus with their brigade in two wheelers. Campaigning is expected to pick up from Thursday as the candidates would be given their numbers by the administrative authorities.
