2 criminals killed in Dombivli encounter

MUMBAI, DEC 19: The Thane police has shot dead two notorious criminals belonging to the Manchekar gang in Manpada, Dombivli, in an encounter this evening. The operation was led by DCP Suresh Ahire.The two Manchekar gang members Manish Sawant (24) and Gurudas Rane (27) had on December 7, 1998, demanded an extortion amount of Rs 15 lakh from the owner of a petrol pump at Manpada.They were to come at 5 pm to the petrol pump to collect the amount.The police had already been tipped and laid a trap. The police asked them to surrender, but the duo fired at them. In retaliation, the police fired. Both of them were badly wounded and died on the way to the hospital.
