CHANDIGARH, Dec 18: The Remount and Veterinary Corps (RVC) celebrated its 219th Raising Day with great enthusiasm and fanfare at Chandimandir, near here, today.A social get-together at Command Officer Mess, attended by a large number of serving and retired officers, marked the occasion. Maj Gen Mehar Singh (retd) was the chief guest.Director RVC, Western Command, Colonel A K Sinha felicitated officers, JCOs, other ranks and civilians of the Corps as well as their families on this occasion.
Raised in 1779, the Corps has made remarkable achievements during its life. Its unique activities include breeding, rearing, training and treating Army horses, mules, dogs and military farm animals.
The Corps is using modern technology in artificial breeding of animals and also doing advanced research in biotechnology and diagnosis of animal disease with modern facilities.
Army dogs and their handlers have shown outstanding performance in counter-insurgency operations by detecting and recovering improved explosive devices and mines. Tracker dogs have also been tracking and apprehending anti-national elements. Their efforts have saved many lives and property, for which several dogs and their handlers have been awarded gallantry awards and commendations.
The RVC has carried out excellent veterinary extension work with the Indian contingent of the UN Peace Keeping Force at Somalia, Angola and other places. RVC units have also rendered valuable animal husbandry services in remote areas to upgrade local equine stock.
