Killed
Phagwara: A couple was crushed to death by a truck near a rest house in the town yesterday when they were going in a scooter to their offices, police said. The accident occurred when government pharmacist Atma Singh was driving his wife Gian Kaur to the city bus stand. A truck hit their scooter, killing them on the spot, police added. Witnesses told police that the mishap occurred due to poor visibility on account of dense fog in the morning. The truck driver managed to escape with the vehicle.

Exams
Amritsar: The Guru Nanak Dev University will conduct UGC tests for research fellowship and lecturers on December 27. Bikram Singh Ghuman, coordinator of the test said the university has dispatched the roll numbers to all eligible candidates. Ghuman said if any candidate does not receive the roll number by December 22, he/she should bring one attested photograph to get the duplicate roll number personally from the School of Punjabi Studies of the university.

Amritsar: Keeping in view the tercentenary celebrations of the birth of Khalsa, Guru Nanak Dev University has decided not to conduct any examination from April 9 to 15. This was disclosed here today by the university Registrar, R.S. Bawa. He said said under the decision, the B.A. parts I, II, and III examinations for private candidates have been preponed. These examinations will now commence from March five, instead of March 10. Similarly, examinations from regular students will start from March 24 instead of April 3 and practical examinations will be held after the theory examinations.

Rally
Amritsar: Guru Nanak Dev University Teachers Association (GNDUTA) today held a rally in front of the Vice-chancellor's office to protest against the GNDU Syndicate's decision to demote Prof S. K. Srivastava. The spokesperson of the association strongly condemned the syndicate's decision against a senior teacher, who was on the verge of retirement and had an excellent academic record. It was demanded that the decision be withdrawn immediately.

Jalandhar on Internet
Jalandhar: Jalandhar was put on the internet map as the National Informatics Centre (NIC) augmented its networking facilities here yesterday. The facility was inaugurated by Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner Som Parkash. The internet facility at the centre would be available for exclusive use of the district administration and other government offices.

Poll Postponed
Nludhiana: The elections of the District Bar Association scheduled for December 19 has been postponed for December 24 in wake of the death of the daughter of K.R.Sikri, one of the candidates in the fray for the post of president.
