CHENNAI, Dec 22: Operations of the Joint Task Force of the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka police to nab the elusive sandalwood smuggler, Veerappan, have been stepped up following a reported attack by the bandit and his gang on a police station in Bhavani taluk in Erode district.Director General of Police, F C Sharma, Additional Director General of Police, S Kumarasamy, and Inspector General and Joint Commandant of the task force, P Kalimuthu, have rushed to Bhavani taluk to inspect the Vellitiruppur police station attacked by Veerappan's gang yesterday.
Chief Secretary A P Muthuswamy, told mediapersons today that the forces are closing in on the forest terrain in the State following the incident. According to the chief secretary, the gang had ransacked the police station, locked up the sub-inspector of police in the cell and decamped with nine musket rifles, some rounds and cash less than Rs 5000. The State government will hold consultations with senior officials and decide on the next course of action, headded.
