NASHIK, Dec 22: The spectre of financial misappropriation hounds the Gholap household, with the Income-Tax (I-T) Department slapping a recovery of Rs 50 lakh on Shashikala, wife of Social Welfare Minister, Babanrao Gholap.The I-T authorities have also frozen Shashikala's savings bank account (No 3201) with the Janalaxmi Cooperative Bank's main branch in Nashik, where her balance is about Rs 30 lakh.
According to sources, Shashikala had deposited about Rs 20 lakh in cash between July 5, 1996, and January 29, 1997, in her bank account. In the same assessment year (1996-97), she had deposited Rs 10 lakh in her account on April 4, 1996. The transaction on her account during the period is to the tune of Rs 50 lakh.
Shashikala, while filing her returns, has showed that she is engaged in farming and in the dairy business. She had bought about 36 acres of land near Baje along the Nashik-Trimbakashwar Road at the cost of over Rs 5 lakh in 1996.
