NAGPUR, DEC 22: The Maharashtra Government today admitted in the Legislative Council that the two State farmers had committed suicides as they were unable to repay loans taken from different financial institutions and money lenders for their crops which was damaged by unseasonal rains and hailstorms.The minister for Revenue Narayan Rane, in a written reply to a question raised by the Legislative Council Leader of the Opposition Chhagan Bhujbal, and others, informed that the government was conducting a detailed inquiry into it. He said that after the inquiry committee report comes in, necessary steps would be taken to provide compensation to the families of the deceased. Rane said the government was considering the proposal for measures to prevent such suicides in the State. A Yavatmal farmer and a farmer from Beed district committed suicide, he further informed.
Vidarbha Janandolan Samiti, headed by the former Bharatiya Janata Party activist, Kishore Tiwari, alleged last fortnight that eight farmers ofthe region committed suicides due to frustration as they could not repay the loan borrowed from money lenders.
The Samiti, led by Tiwari also launched an indefinite rasta roko to highlight the issue and also in support of the hike in raw cotton price under the monopoly procurement scheme from December 14 last which proved to be a fiasco. Rane said the government would be able to computerise the land records of all districts and talukas by March 2001.
