New states won't help: Thakre

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
CHENNAI, DEC 27: BJP President Kushabhau Thakre today said that creation of new states would not necessarily solve the problems of the people concerned.

``Creation of a new State for each section of society will not solve their problems,'' but the governments must instead take initiative to settle issues nagging to their states, Thakre told reporters here. Non-development of local areas, lack of roads and other infrastructure facilities, absence of economic development are the vexed issues facing the people, Thakre said.

Emphasising that an atmosphere of co-existence and peace has to be created by the government among the different groups of society, he said, no democratic government can allow living in isolation. Pointing out a concentrated effort has to be made by both people and government in this direction, Thakre said, it is a long process and a long term plan has to drawn up for achieving this.

The Bharatiya Janata Party supremo attributed the ongoing violence in Assam to some people beingmisguided. Thakre said development of the area, coexistence of all in a peaceful manner and creation of a hunger for development among the people was the BJP's policy for the North-East.

''We want the illegal migrants (determination by tribunals) act to go as today this act is not effective,'' the BJP president said, adding ``we have to persuade our partners who have reservations on scrapping it''.

Describing illegal immigration as a very serious problem, he said, the Assam governor's recent report to the President on the issue was very ``candid'' and that it should be taken very seriously by both Central and State governments as well as the people. On the role of Christian missionaries in the region, he said, ``BJP wants there should be no discrimination as far as religion is concerned. Everybody has the freedom of religion''.

Asked to comment on the recent Congress resurgence in North India, the BJP president said, ``probably this time people thought the BJP was not alive to the issues. We must nowtry to solve the problems as soon as possible''.
