Sharvari, Siddharth on top

MUMBAI, Dec 27: Sole leaders emerged in each category in the Parle-G Inter-Schools Chess Festival at the St. Stanislaus school, organised by the Bandra Chess Club and conducted by Bombay Chess Association.

Vinay Kumar of Abhinav Vidyalaya, Dombivli in under-12, Siddharth Kotian in boys under-8, Mughdha Variyar of Gokuldham in Under-12 and Sharavari Desai of New Bombay school, Vashi in under-8 category emerged sole leaders. Vinay, Siddharth and Sharavari have not lost as yet.

Vinay (6 points) defeated Sanju Malaikal in a Queen's Gambit Accepted variation in 41 moves. In the second position in under-12 boys is Aditya Vora of Don Bosco, Matunga with 5.5 points.

Siddharth (6) is one point ahead of the rest of the field after his win over Saurabh Nayak in the sixth round. Saurabh shares the second spot with Priyal Nagre, Vatsal Shah and Joshua Michael on five points.

Mugdha (4.5) defeated her twin sister, Purva, in 49 moves of English Opening game. Mrudula Nambiar, Tanvi Thakur and Vrushali Kulkarni are inthe second spot with four points.

Boys Under-12 (sixth round): Vinay Kumar (6) bt Sanju Malaikal (5); Ninad Puranik (5) drew with R Chandrashekar (5); Sanket Kulkarni (5) drew with Yashodhan Gogte (5); Aditya Vora (5.5) bt Nilesh Yevle (4); Janak Bhatia (4) lost to Aniruddha Unni (5); Sachin Kamath (5) bt Saket Ketkar (4); Imran Shaikh (5) bt Yogesh Athale (4); Avnish Shety (5) bt Lalit Phadthare (4); Pathik Desai (4) lost to Manish Raut (5); Tarun Yadav (4) lost to Gautam Iyer (5); Prithiviraj Patankar (3.5) lost to Prasad Jathar (5).

Boys Under-8 (sixth round): Saurabh Nayak (5) lost to Siddharth Kotian (6); R Jagannath (4) lost to Priyal Nagre (5); Dhanvin Mehta (4) lost to Vatsal Shah (5); Karan Anijkya (4) lost to Joshua Michael (5); Parth Agarwal (4) bt Umang Khagram (3.5); Aditya Bhat (3) lost to Kaustubh Thipsay (4); Varun Parekh (3) lost to Aditya Udeshi (4); Varun Dhadke (4) bt Akash Parekh (3); Amogh Wajandar (4) bt Kshitij Godbole (3); Chaitanya Shah (4) bt Parthiv Mehta(3).

Girls Under-12 (fifth round): Mugdha Variyar (4.5) bt Purva Variyar (3.5); Mrudula Nambiar (4) drew with Vrushali Kulkarni (4); Tanvi Thakur (4) bt Nikita Brahme (3); Steesta Bojwani (3.5) drew with Priyanka Punjabi (3.5); Swarali Thipsay (3.5) bt Vandita Agarwal (2).

Girls Under-8 (fifth round): Rajvi Mehta (2.5) lost to Saravari Desai (5); Macrena Lobo (3) lost to Nirali Shah (4); Sai Ghate (4) bt Mitila Sawant (2.5); Tanvi Dattani (2.5) drew with Apoorva Thipsay (2.5).
