DECEMBER 28: Notorious gangster Raju alias Philips Kamalakar Shirsat alias Raju Philips of the Arun Gawli gang was detained under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Slumlords, Bootleggers, Drug Offenders and Dangerous Persons Act (MPDA), 1981 on Monday.The detention order was issued by the Commissioner of Police R H Mendonca after he received a proposal from senior police inspector of Agripada police station R K Rathod.
Philips, considered one of the top aides of Gawli, was involved in several cases of murder, rioting, extortion and various other criminal offences in Agripada, Dadaji Konddeo Marg, N M Joshi Marg and Byculla police station areas. He was also involved in the murder of one Naresh Surve at Agripada and was on an extortion demanding spree at Byculla.
Last year, the police had arrested him in connection with an assault on a lady journalist along with Gawli and Suresh Bhaskar alias Amdar. He was later released on bail.
Philips had contested the Lok Sabha elections heldearlier this year from the south-central Mumbai constituency on an Akhil Bharatiya Sena ticket.Arrest under MPDA means that Philips will now not be able to apply for bail for at least one year. His master Gawli too was arrested under MPDA last year, but was released after police failed in proving cases against him a few months back.
