VADODARA, Dec 28: Elections to the M S University students' union will be held on January 5, according to a decision to this effect taken at a meeting today of the university syndicate. Re-polling will be only for those posts that were to be held on December 24; elections that had been held before then would be considered valid.Only those contestants who had filed their nominations earlier would be allowed to contest; there would be no fresh entry. Campaigning would begin on Tuesday and continue till January 4.
The elections held on December 24 had been cancelled after a controversy erupted over a goof-up in the ballot paper.
The syndicate also unanimously decided that all its members would be part of the observers' committee. In the earlier election, only a few syndicate members had been assigned duties, but this time around all syndicate members will be deployed, at different faculties.
Asked whether students against whom there were allegations -- including Janak Makwana, who had reportedly run away with the ballot boxes -- would be allowed to contest, union president S R Pandya said, ``As long as the charges against the student are not proved, no punitive measures can be taken against them''.
The meeting also decided that identity cards of voters would be checked, in a bid to cut down on bogus voting. In fact, police carried out checks of identity cards on the campus during the day to prevent the entry of students who were not the registered students of the university.
