More attacks on churches

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, DEC 29: While Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel spent time reassuring a delegation of Christian priests in the State Capital today, two churches were burnt down and one attacked in Vyara taluka of Surat district at that same time.

According to Father Caesar of Unai village in Vyara taluka, a mob attacked two prayer halls in Takhiamba-Dadadi village, 25 km from Vyara and burnt them down this afternoon. The attackers later moved to nearby Besunia village where a minority Christians population lives in the Sarpanch Falio. The mob attacked the church in the Falio. Some miscreants entered the Church building and hoisted a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh flag atop the structure.

Father Caesar said his colleague Father Robert and the village sarpanch had left for Vyara police station to lodge a first information report and had not returned till late tonight.

On Monday night, a Christian get-together was attacked and stoned at Karenchkhed in the district. Father Galdos of Unai, who had come to attend theget-together, had a narrow escape while returning to Unai at 10 pm. He was returning with a nun and a couple in a jeep when four persons stoned the vehicle and attacked its occupants with dharias. Father Caesar said the nun was hit on her head, and added in all the cases, the attackers came from outside.

He said nuns running an ashramshala at Bardipada village requested the Vyara police to provide protection. Minister of State for Home Haren Pandya and Additional Chief Secretary (Home) V V R Subbarao have asked the local police to provide protection to the ashramshala, sources said.
