DECEMBER 30: Dancing girls working at the 3,500 bars scattered in Mumbai and Thane have called off their indefinite strike late on Monday night following an assurance by owners that their grievances would be looked into. Manjit Singh, President of the Fight for Rights of Bar Owners Association said tips received from customers would be divided in the 60-40 ratio, with dancing girls getting 60 per cent of the take. But representatives of the dancing girls say that's not enough. ``We want a 70-30 division in favour of the girls,'' says Pinky Thakur. Over 20,000 dancing girls have been on strike since December 24 demanding a fair share of the tip they get from customers. The issue will be resolved in a meeting between bar owners and the dancing girls on January 3.
Manjit Singh said bar girls had begun reporting for duty since Tuesday. But Anand Shetty, president of Maharashtra Hotel and Restaurant Ladies' Union says the strike is on. Dancing girls were often shortchanged in the division of spoils in a barwhen customers offered currency notes, he said. ``Bar girls aren't paid any salary by bar owners and survive only on tips. It's like extortion,'' said Shetty.
