MANGALORE, Dec 30: Night curfew was clamped at Suratkal, near here, today after police opened fire in the air to quell violence sparked by a group clash between two communities.Police said 20 persons, including two policemen, were injured and eight police vans damaged in stone-throwing and an autorickshaw and motorcycle set ablaze by the mobs.
The trouble erupted after a quarrel between two groups of boys of different communities on the outskirts of Suratkal. Tension built up after members of both communities lodged a complaint and a counter-complaint, police said. Only a few buses plied in Mangalore while buses on the Mangalore-Udupi route were off the roads as the mobs blocked the national highway for some time.Police said the situation was under control.
