CHENNAI, DEC 30: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today urged the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Government at the Centre to take immediate steps to put an end to fundamentalist atrocities against minorities in various parts of the country. In a statement, the Chief Minister demanded a thorough investigation into `deliberate' attacks against minorities, adding it was the duty of the Government to protect the minorities' constitutional rights. The attacks against Christian religious institutions in Gujarat, in the wake of reports on the assault of nuns in Madhya Pradesh are condemnable, he said.
He said he was pained by attacks on Christians and their institutions in Gujarat, and added they were against the secular nature of the country and its Constitution. Attacks against Christian institutions have become commonplace in the northern and north-eastern States, and should be condemned by those who believe in secularism, he said.
Meanwhile, Puthiya Tamizhagam (PT) leader K Krishnasamy has condemned theattack on Christians and their institutions in Gujarat. In a statement today, he said the BJP is a `sadhu' at the Centre since it is in a minority, and in Gujarat where it enjoys a majority, it behaved in a communal fashion. It is deplorable that the VHP justified these attacks as patriotism, he said and warned that if the VHP indulged in such acts in Tamil Nadu, they would be ``taught a fitting lesson.''
MDMK general secretary Vaiko has also condemned the attack on Christians and churches in Gujarat. In a statement yesterday, he demanded strict action against anti-social elements responsible for the violence. It was unfortunate that incidents which disrupt communal harmony should occur in Gujarat, the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi, the apostle of peace, he said.
