VMC acts on pig disposal

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, Dec 30: Stirred by a series of reports in Express Newsline highlighting pig menace in the city and district, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) has instructed ward officers to dump carcasses of pigs and dogs in the incinerators at Wadi and ensure that they are not strewn all over.

Municipal Commissioner G R Aloria told Express Newsline on Wednesday that, apart from this, a long-term plan was being drawn up to tackle solid waste management in a mechanised manner and set right the storm water drain system.

It may be recalled that to get rid off the menace, Bhayeli villagers had poisoned more than 1,000 pigs that were destroying their fields three-odd weeks ago.

Acknowledging the menace, Aloria said: `It cannot be controlled immediately.'' However, the VMC planned to completely mechanise solid waste management by purchasing more dumper placers and garbage containers by next March. One hundred and fifty garbage containers have been ordered to supplement the 300 that had been purchased earlier.

Setting right the storm water drain will, however, take at least two years, he says, hoping that by making these efforts the pig and dog menace will be at least reduced, if not eliminated.

Claiming that holding meetings would not solve the problem, Aloria said the civic body would spend Rs 1.44 crore from the Finance Commission's grant on laying storm water drains. This is in addition to the Rs 40 lakhs received from the National Slum Development Project.

Meanwhile, District Development Officer (DDO) Anju Sharma said she was willing to lodge a police complaint against those people releasing pigs in villages, provided the villagers came out with names. She said so far she had not received any complaint from the villagers regarding the names of such people.
