Bajrang Dal threatens English dailies

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, JAN 1: The Bajrang Dal has warned the English language newspapers of Gujarat of dire consequences if they ``try to publish reports in an exaggerated manner.'' The warning comes in the wake of a series of attacks on Christians in South Gujarat.

In a letter sent to the English dailies in the state, including The Indian Express, the Surat unit of the Bajrang Dal said: ``If the English dailies try to publish reports in an exaggerated manner, Bajrang Dal will give them a fitting lesson and they will have to face dire consequences.''

``If you want to publish fabricated reports then our doors are closed to you. Mind you, you are not the only one who can do wrong, we too can do so but we do not want to stoop to that level. We remind you that the Bajrang Dal will own up its acts, legal or illegal, and it will own up their consequences which you should take note of,'' the letter said.

The letter, signed by Mafat Siroya and Ashwin Modi of Bajrang Dal Surat Mahanagar, said the leading newspapersof the country had given ``a different turn'' to the incident in the Dangs on December 25.

``Local dailies of Surat and neutral newspapers have published accurate details of the incident after interviewing us but the newspapers from outside Gujarat twisted facts and tried to defame the Hindu society and Hindu organisations,'' the letter said. It added: ``Added to this was the AP (Associated Press) photograph which was given to The Indian Express, The Times of India and The Asian Age.'' The Bajrang Dal said that some cars were damaged outside a church in Surat following a cricket-related brawl. It alleged that the photograph of policemen guarding the church was composed to give the incident ``a different twist.''

The letter, which was sent to the newspaper offices, said that English language newspapers used this photo, circulated by AP, and created ``a wrong impression in the country that the Bajrang Dal had attacked the church.'' ``The photograph has created great confusion and Bajrang Dalis initiating legal action against English dailies,'' the letter said.
